UL Certification

As of this date there is no nationally recognized third party certification procedure for certifying used oil burners for use with cooking oil.  Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is probably the most well respected organization in the world for this purpose and has procedures in place for certifying (listing and labeling) these burners for use with used automotive and industrial lubricants as fuel.

We are working with the burner manufacturer, Clean Burn of Leola, PA; the University of Georgia; and UL to develop a specification that will be the basis for UL to certify waste oil burners, boilers, and furnaces for UCO and rendered animal fats use.  Univ of GA has been burning rendered chicken fat this winter while we burned our UCO.  UL will review the specification and perform site inspections to determine that the systems are safe and reliable for widespread commercial application.

The UL certification is the basis for acceptance by insurers and codes officials nationally.  This winter our system was considered experimental.  As such, our greenhouse is uninsurable and would not be allowed in many jurisdictions across the country.  By next winter this system will have the UL certification necessary to show that it is safe and reliable.
