Four Season Farming

At Laughing Stock Farm we have been growing fresh, local, organic produce for the past seven years.  We are now successfully producing specialty greens, herbs, and root crops year round in Freeport, Maine.  We are working to develop cost effective and environmentally friendly energy sources for greenhouse heat in conjunction with, and with the generous support of, the Maine Department of Agriculture.  The province of Ontario, Canada currently has over 550 acres of greenhouses growing tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers year round.  We believe that the only impediment to successful expansion of this industry in Maine is the cost of conventional petroleum energy.  Lucky for us, we have extensive renewable biomass energy resources in Maine that we are just now beginning to utilize.
